Why “We Track Impressions” Is Not Marketing Accountability

An impression is a number that costs an agency nothing to report and tells you almost nothing about whether your marketing is working. If impressions are in the top section of your monthly report, you are being managed to the wrong metric.

The Hierarchy of Marketing Metrics

Not all metrics are equal. Some tell you what happened at the top of your funnel. Some tell you what happened to your revenue. The further from revenue a metric lives, the easier it is for an agency to produce and the less useful it is to you.

Here is the hierarchy, from least to most useful: impressions, reach, clicks, leads, qualified leads, booked appointments or demos, and closed deals with revenue attributed.

Most agency reports stop at clicks or leads. RevIgnite reports start at closed deals and work backward. We know what you closed this month, which campaigns sourced those deals, and what you spent to get them.

What Happens When You Ask for the Bottom Line

Try asking your current agency: “How much revenue did our marketing produce last month, and which campaign produced the most?” Watch what happens.

Some will give you a lead count and call it revenue. Some will redirect to traffic numbers. Some will send you a longer version of the same report. Very few will give you a number with a dollar sign on it.

We generated over $10 million in attributed client revenue. We can produce that number because we built the infrastructure to track it. Attribution is not a reporting layer we added at the end. It is the foundation we build on at the start of every engagement.

Impressions Have One Legitimate Use

We are not saying awareness is worthless. Conquest email at $0.18 per household builds awareness deliberately and affordably. Brand presence in a local market has value.

But awareness campaigns should be evaluated against brand search lift, not impressions. If your conquest email reach is growing but branded search volume is flat, the campaign is not working. That is a measurable signal, not a guess.

Every channel we run has a measurement plan attached to it before we spend the first dollar. Impressions are a data point, not a metric we report as proof of results.
